Normally, people may experience anxiety when going to the dentist or maxillofacial surgeon because these procedures are invasive and involve instruments that make unpleasant noises. This anxiety is often confused with odontophobia, which is an irrational fear of going to the dentist due to an accumulation of bad experiences. Keep reading to learn more about this and our approach to helping you when you need a maxillofacial surgeon.<\/span><\/p>\n

What is a maxillofacial surgeon for?<\/strong><\/p>\n

<\/strong><\/p>\n

Before we get into the solutions we offer at MD Dental Services, let's talk about the situations in which you might consult a maxillofacial surgeon and what they can do for you.<\/span><\/p>\n

So, people usually consult a maxillofacial surgeon mainly because of wisdom teeth, a procedure that involves extracting the molars that come in at the back of the mouth, which in some cases can cause the teeth to shift out of place. Another common reason for consultation is correcting a bad bite or even correcting abnormalities related to the anatomical structure of the jaws or bones that keep the patient's face from being in harmony.<\/span><\/p>\n

Maxillofacial surgery is often closely related to orthodontics, which aims to correct aesthetic and bite problems that make people's lives easier. When it is discovered that a bite or jaw problem cannot be solved with orthodontics alone, that's where maxillofacial surgery comes in to solve it.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/span><\/p>\n

Among the conditions treated, the maxillofacial surgeon can correct deformities such as cleft lip and cleft palate. They also treat benign tumors that can affect the jaws.<\/span><\/p>\n

On the other hand, the maxillofacial surgeon is able to intervene in emergency cases involving accidents that affect the jaws (the bones that hold your teeth).<\/span><\/p>\n

How do I know if I need maxillofacial surgery?<\/strong><\/p>\n

To know if you need a maxillofacial surgeon, it's important to know the current state of your bite and jaws (the bones of the head and the biting process taking place). This initial diagnosis is made during the consultation through photographs and X-rays, which, once studied, determine (and the surgeon decides) the best solution for your case, whether this involves orthodontics first and\/or surgery afterward. (this may be through orthodontics or through surgery.)<\/span><\/p>\n

Our approach at our clinic (MD Dental Services) is to provide the best experience to our patients, understanding that for them this means more than just a surgery. We aim for our patients to have little to no postoperative pain and to feel important, since we support them from the start of their process through their surgery and full recovery. (the treatment is based on the patient having as little pain as possible, and to achieve this, we work closely with patients, which involves clarifying as many questions as the person may have, along with full support from the first consultation through the procedure and recovery.)<\/span><\/p>\n

Another advantage is that we have the most up-to-date technology available in the world, which allows us to find new ways of performing procedures that adapt to each person's needs, because even though there are common or generic genetic problems, not everyone has the same path or the same way of correcting a jaw position anomaly.<\/span><\/p>\n

We are driven by a constant desire to keep learning, and we do this through 3D modeling, where, taking into account the diagnosis, the physical exam, and additional tests needed to make the relevant corrections, we generate a virtual 3D surgery process where the operation is performed, allowing us to foresee details that lead to more predictable results (the lessons learned from this first procedure are taken into account.)<\/span><\/p>\n

After this, the actual procedure is carried out on the patient using minimally invasive techniques that help the patient (and from there we work on minimizing) have little to no pain and a faster than average recovery (the pain and making sure the operation causes as little trauma as possible). For this, we design the recovery process using the most advanced techniques, such as diode laser and ultrasound, which allow for better recovery. We should note that all our patients leave able to open their mouths \u2014 teeth are no longer wired shut like they were a couple of years ago. (and less discomfort, such as having the mouth closed or being limited to liquid diets for long periods of time.)<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/span><\/p>\n

Our focus is the patient, and that's where we are the unconditional ally who will not only help with their need but will also help make anxiety or odontophobia more manageable in the best way. The first step to overcoming phobia or anxiety is finding someone who gives you confidence from the very first moment, and that's us \u2014 we have more than 10 years of experience and understand our patients' concerns. Additionally, we work hand in hand with the patient, helping them step by step to control anxiety and move forward in overcoming their phobia with a team trained and specialized for this purpose.<\/span><\/p>\n

As for recovery, we use techniques that help the patient recover better without leaving them completely incapacitated, so they can get back to their life calmly. In our recovery space we use techniques that include laser biostimulation and ultrasound therapies that help better tissue reconstruction, with a faster reduction in (de)inflammation compared to average (which with other professionals can be seen taking a longer amount of time.)<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

How do you overcome the phobia or anxiety of going to the dentist?<\/strong><\/p>\n

<\/strong><\/p>\n

The first step is accepting that there is anxiety or phobia, which means understanding the reasons that trigger the anxiety or phobia. Second, it involves building a relationship of trust with the dental staff and starting to assess needs step by step in order to achieve the goals.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/span><\/p>\n

Another very important point to keep in mind here is that when it comes to visiting the maxillofacial surgeon, many people assume it will be a painful operation and don't give themselves the chance for a prior review where doubts can be resolved or where their fears and expectations about the procedures can be understood (largely the fault of wisdom teeth, right?). For this reason, the most important thing a patient should do is get informed and do some research.<\/span><\/p>\n

Throughout this post we've shown that it is possible to consult a maxillofacial surgeon and to carry out jaw position improvement procedures that don't involve major surgical intervention, which will greatly reduce anxiety and phobia and keep the main goal focused on the patient's well-being.<\/span><\/p>\n
